OUR STORY

In December 2004, and due to the need to spread the Extension activities, the “Universidad de Magallanes” radio station was born, signal 88.9 FM, in charge of systems analyst Pedro Moreno.

UMAG TV, channel 33 of TV Cable, started a year later, broadcasting the same music as on the radio, with the album cover on the screen and, in the second half of 2006, it added the recordings of artistic activities, talks by academics, presentations of musical bands, made by the outstanding audiovisual producer Jorge Grez

Pedro and Jorge formed the first UMAG TV team.

Today, Moreno is in charge of the Executive Direction and Management, the Executive Production, the television transmission through Empresa de Cable TV RED in Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales, Puerto Williams and Coyhaique, and the digital television transmission of Free Reception by channel 25.2. He is also in charge of technical project execution support, the preparation of the programmatic grid, and the editing and re-mastering of the sound.

Grez is the Television Director for all the shows. He handles the switch, records on camera, edits and edits, and in this way he makes documentaries and reports on his own bill, alone or together with journalists from the channel. It also digitizes images (transfer of formats to DVD) and collects external billing audiovisual materials. In total, it contributes around 50 hours per month for the programmatic grid.

In March 2011 , Mario Arturo Saldivia Subiabre, an audiovisual producer with outstanding work in Magallanes, and Paula Viano Santana, a journalist with more than 10 years of experience in commercial television news programs , joined the team . Viano is the journalistic editor of the weekly University Agenda, journalistic producer and director of reports, creator and host of institutional programs, and coordinator of audiovisual projects in the context of scientific projects, performance agreements, long-term university programs and agreements with institutions. external, among others. In addition, it serves as support to the Communications Department.

The channel's second journalist is Rodrigo Carcamo . She is in charge of the reporting and journalistic elaboration of the news of the University Agenda, a news capsule of the television channel Umag TV; eventually supports the making of reports, and Loliett Valdés works with Arturo Saldivia Subiabre, who performs the function of cameraman editor of the news of the University Agenda from the beginning of the channel's creation. Saldivia also sends a selection of notes to the national news of state universities, edits the selection that is broadcast by ITV Patagonia, records the presentation on camera of the host of the program "I invite you to the opera" and supports recordings of concerts and other events.

In 2012, the Faculty of Engineering ceded a classroom to the channel, in order to install a recording set there, which since that year has been in charge of Darío Gómez Miranda. Gómez prepares the studio for the recordings, coordinates the production with the Director of Television, is a technical assistant on location and, as of 2014, is in charge of preparing the equipment and streaming the activities carried out in the Ernesto auditorium Livacic.

In 2013, the need to have a Graphic Designer was understood, who would be dedicated to standardizing the UMAG TV Image and brand; to create and give graphic solutions to programs with animations and Motion Graphics; to design scenographies with the chroma system and presentations and closings of television programs, and to prepare the promotions of the same and of the institution. That position today is held by two professionals with part-time each: Rubén Sillard and Mauricio Mayorga.

To support Jorge Grez in the camera recording and digital edition, the audiovisualist Gustavo Agurto Vergara was hired, who is in charge of doing the camera and editing for the reports of Cuna de Ideas and others, and of technically assisting the programming. The puzzle is completed with Miguel Ángel Castillo, who supports streaming from the auditorium; Dania Hernández, who designed and keeps the website updated, and the hosts of the musical programs Milton Jones, Víctor Díaz and Patricio Riquelme.

Today  We are convinced that we have a top-quality professional team, state-of-the-art technology in full HD digital format, the possibility of going out on a signal open to the entire community and free of charge; a series of new audiovisual challenges in the making.

The invitation is to contribute to this work, which also integrates the student, academic and scientific world of the University of Magallanes and which is projected over time as the educational, artistic and cultural offer of the small screen in Chilean Patagonia.

COLLEGE TELEVISION

Just as university communications have an incipient degree of professionalization, the main challenge for educational television is to acquire that knowledge in production and audiovisual technical quality, with which it has ceased to be familiar since it handed over the task to the private sector. But there is an advantage, and it is in the contents. The programming of national channels lacks culture so much that there are families who have already completely banished television from their homes, or have resorted to on-demand or cable products.

UMAG TV  It has that advantage, thanks to the thirty careers that the University offers, and the generation of knowledge, both by the students at the time of graduation, and by the postgraduate academics who publish. Added to this are several decades of work by the Institute of Patagonia – which has depended on the University of Magallanes since 1985 – therefore, the university is in a position to tell the inhabitant of this Patagonian macro-region who has inhabited it since the original peoples, with what biodiversity they have shared the space and what projections the existing resources allow. In simple words, the UMAG can collaborate with the formation of an educated people based on self-knowledge, which knows who it is, where it stands and what is the most appropriate behavior in such circumstances.

But that advantage also exists thanks to competition. The Red Austral de Televisión Nacional de Chile only has news programming with little scientific content, except for the program Chile Conectado, which is broadcast for one hour every Sunday afternoon (where, by the way, the University of Magallanes has appeared with some Projects). Except for a few interviews that are sometimes made to UMAG academics, the regional channels have an editorial line focused on entertainment, and some only broadcast popular music. In other words, if a viewer looks for cultural information on a regional channel, they only have UMAG TV.

Our channel also has nothing to envy commercial channels in technical terms. In fact,  in the year  2012  In the eyes of the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, he surpassed everyone by being selected in Magallanes – only, with ITV Patagonia (ARCATEL member) – to transmit experimentally by open digital signal definitively since December 2013. The same achievement forced him to go ahead , acquiring the necessary digital equipment to enter the new era (we are still in the process), and the use of Macintosh computers has allowed not only to have high image and sound quality, but also software that allows saving the hiring of a dedicated person, exclusively, to the task of entering the programming to the network.

UMAG TV is also regional and global. It transmits its programming by cable in Puerto Williams, Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas, and since December 2013, via open digital signal to Cerro Sombrero and Porvenir. In addition, it is projected shortly to connect the Fuegian capital by cable. But the channel can be seen anywhere on the planet connected to the internet, because it has a signal  www.umagtv.cl  to watch it live, and a repository or video library on YouTube/radiotvumag  to view on demand.

In addition, in November 2013, it began broadcasting live on the internet all the talks and events that take place in the Ernesto Livacic auditorium, signal UMAGTV2  www.umagtv.cl   broadcasts its contents throughout the country, through the VTR, which broadcasts its programs throughout Chile, with the signal CNN in SPANISH, takes regional news broadcast by our university, in addition to distributing its audiovisual material, with the 16 Public Universities of the country.

Year 2019, In the month of May, our signal UMAGTV definitively obtains the TVD 45 channel for 20 years through the CON-2017-66 CNTV Contest, signal 45, PUNTA ARENAS - XII. Awarded to the   University of Magellan
